Starry Sky
Since it was first exhibited at the National Museum of Prehistory in Halle, I am fascinated by the Sky Disc of Nebra!
Dug from the earth by treasure hunters on the hill "Mittelberg" near Nebra, pursued through whole Germany and then brought back to Halle, you can admire the Sky Disk in a permanent exhibition of the museum in all its restored glory today.
The golden symbols on the green corroded Sky Disk be interpreted as a representation of the night sky.
The big wheel was first interpreted as the sun, but now as the full moon and the crescent moon as the waxing moon. The cluster of the seven gold plates in the upper region of the disk probably represent the star cluster of the Pleiades.
The horizon bows on the sides were added later. They illustrate the sunrise and sunset between winter and summer solstice. The solar barque symbolizes the nightly passage of the sun from east to west.
There are some other interpretations. But for me the Sky Disk was always what it seems to be at first sight - a reflection of the night sky with moon and stars and the solar barque, which travels back and forth between day and night.
My little starry sky jewelry collection exhibits icons that are also found on the Sky Disk - although in a different form and color. Sun, moon and stars - in midsummer blue and silver glittering jewels, which have partially noctilucent elements. Who does not wear such jewelry when making the summer night to day? Look with me in the stars!
Of course, I also hung in the shop window of Klunkerfisch-store a large sky disc - look here in Bellis' Blog (only in German)!
Ah yes, the sun bark has inspired me to a special Starry Sphere - look at it! Doesn't look it beautiful?
