The red slate, from which this pendant was made, comes from Canada. The finely crystalline, argillaceous nature of this slate is ideal for milling and drilling it and so bring figures and structures out of the stone.

In this large, flat slate slice six small fish were milled in. They look like embedded fossils like footprints from a time long past.
The fish play together and seem to sniff at the two "bubbles", the holes for hanging. Or look they up at the two silver fish, sitting on the beading wire about the pendant?
In the boreholes silver pearls sit on the jewelry wire.

The edges of the slate plate were sanded off, so they do not have sharp edges.
The slate-disc was matt varnished, so skin and clothes will not contaminated by slate dust.

The necklace pendant is 8,3 cm wide and 4,0 cm high. The pendant hangs on two strands beading wire (length: 46 cm).
The necklace closes with a screw closure.

Note: Slate is brittle due to its crystalline properties and should therefore be handled with care - don't let the jewel fall on a hard surface, otherwise it may break!

Find out more about Slate:
Slate is a special material and rudimentary also a geological history book.
Approximately 350 million years the slate has needed to occur as sedimentary rocks in its present form that we use today.
A large sea flooded in the geological eras Silurian, Devonian and Carboniferous today's Central Europe. The mud of the ablated mountains brought with quartz, feldspar and mica, and encamped as clay mud on the seabed off. Boulders and water masses solidified and pressed this clay slurry over time. about 300 million years ago, these layers have been raised during the so-called Variscan folds by lateral pressure. By crystallization, the properties that are responsible for the present cleavage emerged.
About 450 AD, the Romans began to gain in the low mountains on the Rhine slate as a building material.
today comes the most slate from the Spanish Pyrenees, in small amounts even from Eifel, Hunsrück and Sauerland in Germany.
So my slate jewels have a long history behind them. ;o)
