Baroque Pearls
Georg Frederic Handel's time was the Baroque - a period in European art history (about 1575-1770), which is characterized by extravagant splendor and in which people felt the need to spend an incredible amount of money for expensive clothes - decorated with gold lace, brocade and ruffles - and pompous, opulent jewelry.
The word "Baroque" comes from the Portuguese language, were designated in the irregularly shaped pearls as barroco, meaning "uneven" or "oblique".
Pearls were therefore often used for the pompous and dazzling jewels of the Baroque.
Also conch ornaments were an often lush and used decorative element in the Baroque. Originally, the mussel was the Christian symbol of the divine conception: Maria (the shell) receives Jesus (the pearl) through the Holy Spirit.
In Baroque, the mussel was generally considered a symbol for the reception of divine grace.
